Scroll down to read a great little tip (article below) on making your casting line provided by Paul Riegert our “in house” FFI certified casting instructor:

I have been tying my own leaders for years, and found a few formula’s that work well. For my fly lines I build a tapered leader that will consist of 30#, 20#, 15#, and 10# material. I will adjust this combination as needed.

  • YOU CAN PURCHASE THE AMNESIA MONOFILAMENT FROM EBAY.
  • Open ebay, and search “Sunset Line” Amnesia should come up in the search window Select weight, then color, and add to cart.
  • Repeat four times for the material needed
    30#, 20#, 15#, and 10#.

  • I USE THE FOLLOWING FORMULA
  • 36″ of  #30
  • 24″ of  #20
  • 18″ of  #15
  • 18″ of  #10

The 10# tip section is your wear section, and can be replaced, or extended as needed.

CONNECTING THE SECTIONS

  • Join each section with a blood knot 5/6 turns.
  • Use a perfection loop on the 30# upper tip, and the 15# lower tip, and again on the 10# upper tip.
  • Use an improved clinch knot for the yarn, just as you would if tying on a fly.
  • This will give you an 8′ leader length, with loop to loop connections.
